Caspar Van Wittel “The Tiber and Castle Sant Angelo” at the Colonna Gallery in Rome

The Tiber and Castle Sant Angelo Caspar Van Wittel's works are on display at the Colonna Palace, specifically in the Vanvitelli Room of Princess Isabella's Apartment.
This room, where many of the painter's works are on display, is called the Vanvitelli Room, the Van Wittel Room.
Van Vittel arrived in Rome in 1674 and worked for three generations of the Colonna family.
He began painting for Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna, then for his son Filippo II Colonna, and finally for Fabrizio Colonna, son of Filippo II, for whom he painted his last canvas: “City with the Bridge of Augustus” in 1732.
Van Wittel was one of the very first vedutisti: by faithfully depicting everyday scenes of his time, he left us a precious record of his era, as these are true photographs of architecture, means of transport and navigation, trades, people in costume, etc.
This view of Rome shows us, particularly well reproduced, the Castle Sant Angelo, with the Ponte Sant'Angelo bridge over the Tiber to its right.
We can see that the Tiber was much less clear at the time than it is today, with islands and ruins in the middle of its bed.
