Virgin Enthroned

Bartolomeo Vivarini (1430-1490) “Virgin Enthroned with the Blessing Child”

Tempera on wood (198 x 41 cm) 1471

Vivarini painted the infant Jesus blessing, dressed in a green tunic, the colour of resurrection.

The Virgin Mary's face expresses tenderness mixed with melancholy for her child, who is comfortably seated on cushions.

She is seated on a relatively modest throne, but the richness of her clothing can be seen in the delicate, silky folds of her light-coloured dress.

A painting with great presence.
