Tintoretto's “Narcissus at the Fountain” at the Colonna Gallery in Rome

Narcissus at the Fountain
Tintoretto (1519-1594) “Narcissus at the Fountain”
Oil on canvas (148 x 190 cm) 1555-1560Tintoretto took particular care with the landscape and the different planes of its various elements to give depth to the painting and highlight the beauty of Narcissus in the foreground.
Narcissus' presence is reinforced by the light colours of his clothes, the gold of his blond hair and the freshness of his beautiful face leaning over a particularly dark background that attracts his attention, showing his total indifference to the young girls not far from him.

Narcissus at the Fountain The water in the fountain in which Narcissus admires himself is barely sketched; we sense it more than we see it.
Tintoretto allows us to imagine his hand reaching towards the mirror of the water to touch his image.
Narcissus' attraction to himself is accentuated by the way he leans forward.
We sense that he is on the verge of losing his balance, his hand clinging to the rock.
The concentrated expression on his face shows his fascination with his image: everything around him ceases to exist.
