Caspar Van Wittel “Venice seen from St. Mark's Basin towards Santa Maria della Salute” at the Colonna Gallery in Rome

Caspar Van Wittel, Santa Maria della Salute and the Grand Canal, Colonna Gallery in Rome
Santa Maria della Salute and the Grand Canal
Caspar Van Wittel was one of the precursors of Canaletto, whom he met during his stay in Rome.

Van Wittel was one of those who encouraged Canaletto to become a painter instead of remaining a simple venue set designer.

This painting is historically valuable as it shows us in detail, and probably accurately, Venice and the intensity of traffic on the Grand Canal at the end of the 17th century.

The waters of the Grand Canal are much calmer than today, but it is still lined with beautiful palaces, most of which remain unchanged.
