Caspar Van Wittel “The Piazzetta of Venice seen from St. Mark's Basin” at the Colonna Gallery in Rome

Caspar Van Wittel, The Piazzetta of St. Mark's This painting of the Piazzetta San Marco with its two columns, the Marciana Library on the left, St. Mark's Bell Tower and the clock tower in the centre, and the Doge's Palace on the right, was reproduced from the same angle and with almost the same framing by Canaletto.
This reproduction shows Van Wittel's influence on the Venetian painter.
The Clock Tower and St. Mark's Basilica can be seen in the background.
It is interesting to note that Venetian women rowed as much as Venetian men, since on the boat on the right, it is a woman at the stern who is rowing in the Venetian style, as gondoliers still do today.
