Palma the Elder “Virgin and Child, Saint Peter and Donor” at the Colonna Gallery in Rome

Virgin and Child, Saint Peter and Donor
Palma the Elder (1480 - 1528) “Virgin and Child, Saint Peter and Donor”
Oil on wood (81 x 108.5 cm) 1516-1518This painting of the Virgin and Child by Palma the Elder depicts the infant Jesus blessing the donor, who is shown kneeling with his hands clasped in prayer, while Saint Peter places a hand on his shoulder.
Saint Peter is easily recognisable, as he is holding two keys in his other hand.
He has a pensive, somewhat sad look, as does the Virgin Mary; both are lost in thought, elsewhere.
Only the infant Jesus has a strong presence in the centre of the painting.
He is also the lightest element, which makes him stand out even more.
The drapery of the Virgin's headdress and the lapels of her cloak are truly beautiful.
