Tintoretto (1519-1594) “Portrait of Onofrio Panvinio”

Oil on canvas (112 x 89 cm) 1555

Onofrio Panvinio (born in Verona on 23 February 1529 and died in Palermo on 7 April 1568) was a scholar of the Augustinian order, a specialist in Roman antiquity, and librarian to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese.

Panvino drew an archaeological map of ancient Rome in 1565.

Tintoretto emphasises his erudition here by depicting him with a book in his hands.

This portrait of Onofrio Panvinio at the age of 26 is typical of Tintoretto's pictorial language, which uses chiaroscuro to better highlight the character's face and hands.

The monk's body has disappeared beneath his black habit against a black background, but the light and intensity of spiritual life visible on his face and in his eyes give him an extraordinary presence.

Tintoretto has created a magnificent portrait of this man who devoted his life to study.
