The 5th century Palaeochristian mosaics in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome
These mosaics are the oldest in the church, originally numbering 42, 21 on each side of the nave, but, as a result of the basilica's restructuring and also, given their age, only 27 remain. They are organised into two groups : on the left, the scenes recounting the story of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and on the right, the scenes from the lives of Moses and Joshua.
