The Baptistery of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome

Baptistery Mary Major In 1825, Pope Leo XIII decided that the left side nave of the church would become the baptistery, moving the canons' choir there, which had previously been in the Sforza Chapel.
The architect of this renovation was Giuseppe Valadier (1762-1839).
He also created the gilded bronze sculpture of St John the Baptist on the baptismal font.
Finally, the frescoes adorning the vault of the baptistery were painted by Passignano (1559-1638).
The Virgin Mary is at the centre of the vault, while, on the sides, the four evangelists and the four greatest prophets can be seen.
